Type Mismatch on Email to Case (Only in New Version 1.4.2.0)

I recently upgraded from 1.1.0.0 to 1.4.2.0:

I was using this tool to create a case based on an incoming email - and I was populating the Customer field on the Case with the From field on the Email. This worked great in 1.1.0.0, but in 1.4.2.0, when trying to map the From Attribute to the Customer field, it throws a Type Mismatch Error. I tried ignoring the error and tested the plugin anyway (hoping that it would still work), but sure enough, the System Job showed that there was an error in populating this field.

I've since uninstalled this new version and reinstalled the old one and it is working again - was this change by design? Or is this a bug?
